Today is Vesak Full Moon Poya Day

Buddhists around the world celebrate Vesak with great devotion, giving priority to amisha and pratipatti poojas.

The birth of Prince Siddhartha, the enlightenment of the Bodhisattvas and the passing of the Pirinivas are special events that took place on Vesak day.

The Venerable Buddha was sent to Kelaniya on the full moon day of Vesak at the invitation of King Maniakkhitha Na in the eighth year of his enlightenment. During the journey, the Venerable Buddha who ascended the Samanala hill made a note of the ‘Siripa’ note and it is noteworthy that the end of the ‘Siripa’ season commemorating it falls on the full moon day of Vesak.

It is said that the arrival of Prince Vijaya and the commencement of the construction of Ruwanweli Seya by King Dutugemunu also took place on the 15th day of Vesak. Ananda Thera, who is considered to be the Dhamma Treasurer of the Buddha, also passed away on Vesak Poya Day.
