21st amendment needs a referendum

The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday (26) that a referendum was required for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

Solicitor General President’s Counsel Indika Demuni de Silva made this announcement to the Supreme Court on behalf of the Attorney General.

These facts were raised when several petitions filed by Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera and others against the 21st Amendment to the Constitution were considered before the Supreme Court.

The petitions were filed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Buwaneka Aluvihare. The case was heard by a panel of Supreme Court judges comprising Janak de Silva.
