Former SSP Shani Abeysekara Rejoins Police as Director of Central Criminal Intelligence Analysis Bureau
Former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekara has re-entered the police force, now serving on a contractual basis as the Director of the Central Criminal Intelligence Analysis Bureau. This decision follows the approval of his nomination by the National Police Commission, upon recommendation from the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Abeysekara previously held the role of Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where he led several high-profile investigations, including the probe into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. His investigation implicated various state agencies, which created friction with influential figures, marking a significant moment in his career.
Additionally, Abeysekara played a key role in the last Presidential Election, where he publicly supported President Anura Kumara Dissanayake by aligning with the National People’s Power (NPP) and its collective of retired police officers.
