Kaduwela Magistrate Chanima Wijebandara today (04) rejected a request made by the Thalangama Police to issue an order preventing the anti-government protest to be held jointly by the Inter University Students Federation and student organizations near Parliament tomorrow (05) and the day after tomorrow (06).
The court rejected the request stating that the facts presented by the police were not sufficient to prevent the protest.
The court stated that the public has the right to protest in accordance with Article 14 of the Constitution and that police powers should be exercised if anyone behaves in a manner that causes public distress.
The Thalangama Police had requested the court to issue an order suspending the protests as the sessions of the parliament could be disrupted tomorrow (05) and the day after tomorrow (06).
The police informed the court that these protesters will break the privileges of parliamentary privileges due to their vehicles and obstructing them. Due to this, the police requested the court to issue an order to stop the protests.
Taking into consideration the facts presented, the court rejected the requests made by the police.
