UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the 26th Prime Minister of independent Sri Lanka before President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday.
Ranil Wickremesinghe came to Parliament for the party’s only National List seat at a time when the UNP suffered a crushing defeat in the 2019 General Elections.
Political analysts say that it is a miracle that Ranil Wickremesinghe, who came to Parliament as a single Member of Parliament at a time when there was a two-thirds majority government under a President who was empowered by the 20th Amendment, has become the Prime Minister of the country.
This is the sixth time that Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only politician in the world to have been elected Prime Minister six times. It is also considered a world record.
