Sri Lanka Police Crackdown on Drunk Driving: Licences May Be Revoked for 12 Months

Sri Lanka Police has announced plans to request courts to revoke or suspend driving licences for up to 12 months for individuals arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The initiative aims to curb traffic violations and ensure road safety during the festive season.

The Police urged the public to refrain from driving under the influence, emphasizing that stricter penalties are part of the effort to reduce traffic accidents.

During a 24-hour special operation ending at 6:00 am on December 26, legal action was taken against 395 individuals for drunk driving. The operation also led to arrests for other violations, including:

  • 50 drivers for reckless driving
  • 120 for speeding
  • 1,262 for general traffic violations
  • 682 for licence-related offences
  • 5,441 for various other traffic offences

In total, 7,950 drivers faced legal action within the period.

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) had earlier instructed an islandwide special traffic operation starting December 20, targeting traffic violations during the holiday season. The initiative highlights the importance of responsible driving to prevent accidents and maintain public safety.
