Steps are being taken to amend the constitution which gives power to the parliament – President

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says that steps will be taken this week to appoint a Prime Minister and a Cabinet of Ministers who can strengthen the confidence of the majority and the people in Parliament.

Addressing the nation today, the President said that steps would be taken to amend the Constitution to re-enact the contents of the 19th Amendment which gives Parliament power.

The President stated that he strongly condemned the incident that took place on May 9 and had already instructed the IGP to initiate an investigation into the incident.

The President also stated that murders and robberies that took place throughout the country could not be justified based on that incident.

The President pointed out that steps are being taken to bring peace to the country by involving the security forces and that the primary responsibility of the government is to ensure the security of all citizens.

The President stated that the law will be strictly enforced against all those who planned, supported and publicized the incident.
