Teledrama Actor Remanded for Attempted Bribery After Drug Arrest in Thanamalwila
A teledrama actor has been remanded by the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court until October 11, following an alleged attempt to bribe the Thanamalwila Police Officer in Charge (OIC) with Rs. 1 million. The bribe attempt came after the actor’s arrest for possessing the narcotic drug ICE.
Arrest and Bribery Allegation
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Asanka Edirisinghe Arachchi from Balaharawa, Thanamalwila, was taken into custody on Friday, October 4, during a police raid based on a tip-off. Authorities apprehended Arachchi while he was attempting to sell 10 grams and 300 milligrams of ICE in the Balaharawa area.
After his arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to offer Rs. 1 million to the OIC in exchange for his release. A lawyer also arrived at the police station during the incident to provide legal assistance to the actor.
Ongoing Investigations and Previous Charges
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is also facing charges related to a previous drug trafficking case involving Rs. 40 million worth of narcotics in Talaimannar. Additionally, authorities have launched a separate investigation into the suspect’s undeclared wealth, further complicating his legal situation.
Following his court appearance on Saturday, October 5, the actor was remanded until October 11 for further questioning. Investigations are being conducted by the Thanamalwila Police.
