A bridge in Mexico collapsed just as it was being opened
A newly built suspension bridge in Mexico collapsed shortly after opening, injuring 20 people, including the mayor who opened it.
Hospital sources said that the condition of several of the injured was serious.
The bridge was made of planks and iron chains. It was built on top of a precipice with a small stream. Many people, including the mayor of Kournawaka, his wife, and municipal officials were present to open the bridge.
The bridge escaped the chains as the crowd walked across the bridge after the mayor opened it. The mayor as well as his wife were reportedly injured. The rest fell 10 feet. Video footage of the bridge collapsing has now become public on social media and abroad.
