India bans export of wheat flour

India has banned the export of wheat flour due to inability to meet the demand on low production. Wheat flour prices in the world market have risen sharply following India’s announcement of a ban on wheat flour exports.

Following the announcement of the ban, the Chicago Wheat Index in the United States rose 5.9 percent, the first time in two months that the index has risen this much.

Wheat flour prices in the country have soared to record highs due to the devastation of the wheat harvest in northern India and rising fuel prices due to the war in Ukraine. With the rise in the price of local wheat flour, the prices of almost all bakery products in India, including bread, cakes and pastries, have gone up. Although the export of wheat flour has been banned, Indian authorities say that wheat flour will be exported to countries facing food shortages and to countries that have already provided documents to supply wheat flour.
