Maldives garage fire: 10 dead

A fire broke out in a car repair garage in Malé, the capital of the Maldives. It is said that 10 people lost their lives in the fire and 9 of those 10 were Indians.

The remaining deceased was a Bangladeshi national. The building where the garage is located has two floors. The fire started on the ground floor. It is said that vehicle repairs are done in this maha.

After that, the fire quickly spread to the upper floor, and a group of employees who were caught in the fire on the upper floor died. They have not been able to leave.

Maldivian media reported that firefighters were called to put out the fire, but it was difficult to control the fire due to fuel, oil and other chemicals in the garage.

It is said that it took more than 5 hours to extinguish the fire. After that, the burnt bodies were found in the upper floor.

Almost half of the population of the state of Male are foreign workers. Most of them are Bangladeshi, Indian, Nepali, Pakistani and Sri Lankan.

Mohammad Nasheed, who is also a former President of Maldives and the current Speaker of Parliament, said in a Twitter message that he was shocked by the incident.

It is seen in Nasheed’s tweet that he was saddened for the deceased and expressed his condolences to their family members.
