Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92
Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and a towering figure in the country’s political and economic history, passed away at the age of 92. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed that Dr. Singh was admitted to the emergency department, where he breathed his last despite efforts to revive him through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah village, West Punjab (now part of Pakistan), Dr. Singh’s journey from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of Indian politics is a story of unparalleled dedication. He held a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Oxford, marking the beginning of a distinguished academic and administrative career.
Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from May 22, 2004, to May 26, 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. His tenure of 3,656 days made him the third longest-serving Prime Minister in India’s history, following Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, Dr. Singh’s contributions to the country extend beyond his decade-long premiership. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, he spearheaded transformative economic reforms that opened India’s economy to the world, setting the stage for decades of growth and development.
